The government of Benin Republic has brought fresh charges against Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, a prominent advocate for Yoruba Nation.
Igboho’s legal team, led by Ibrahim Salami, revealed the new charges after a court hearing on Monday night, which resulted in Igboho being remanded in police custody.
The legal team expected extradition charges from the Nigerian government, but instead, Igboho faced charges including illegal migration, collusion with immigration officers, and attempting to incite civil unrest.
According to Salami, the judge sought to investigate how Igboho entered Benin Republic illegally, conspired with others to do so, and his intentions in the country.
Additional allegations included arms trafficking, inciting violence, and causing disunity in Nigeria, which the lawyer claimed lacked evidence.
Meanwhile, the Yoruba Koya Liberation Movement (YKLM) has warned President Muhammadu Buhari, Attorney General Abubakar Malami, Ambassador Tukur Buratai, and other officials allegedly involved in Igboho’s persecution to desist.
The group emphasized that no oppressor has ever succeeded against the collective will of the people and urged the leaders to remember that their actions will not go unaccounted for forever.
