Fans across Nigeria have raised alarm that the Super Eagles still do not have a new coach more than six weeks after Finidi George quit and ahead of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers in September.
Earlier this month, the NFF technical committee shortlisted four coaches for the Super Eagles top job, namely Herve Renard, Eric Chelle, Tom Saintfiet and Steve McClaren.
However, the NFF executive committee led by president Ibrahim Gusau has yet to make an appointment.
President of the Super Eagles Supporters Club, Vincent Okumagba, said qualification for the 2026 World Cup is the priority and so it is “very disturbing” that a new Super Eagles coach has yet to be named.
“We didn’t qualify for the last World Cup in Qatar and now a country like Nigeria does not have a coach, this is very disturbing,” said Okumagba
“Priority is to qualify Nigeria to the 2026 World Cup, except we don’t want to be at the next World Cup
“We have good players, who need to do more than they are doing, and we need the best coach.
“There will be no room for excuses.”
Ado Rabiu, a fan who is based in Abuja, blasted the NFF leadership for lacking capacity and commitment.
“How can all the top NFF officials be gallivanting at the Paris Olympics when we still don’t have a coach for the Super Eagles?” he fumed.
“It only shows how unserious these officials are.”
Another Super Eagles fan, Deji Bamidele, appealed to President Bola Tinubu to as a matter of urgency wade into this issue as the NFF have clearly shown they are not up to the task.
“President Tinubu must come to the rescue of Nigeria football because the NFF have lost focus, no ideas or drive and cannot help the Super Eagles,” he said.
“Already the 2025 AFCON qualifiers are upon us without a coach and yet these officials are off on another ego trip to France.”
“They took their time before they appointed Finidi and we all know what happened after that, they are doing the same again to appoint a new coach for the Super Eagles,” he added.
