Prominent Yoruba sons and daughters in the diaspora have appealed to people behind the planned nationwide protest not to use the opportunity to perpetrate violence in the Southwest.
General Coordinator of the Yoruba Mandate Group, Akogun Banji Ojo, made this appeal on Wednesday on behalf of Yorubas in the diaspora.
There have been fears over the #End Bad Government protest which is expected to commence across Nigeria from tomorrow, August 1, 2024.
Akogun Banji Ojo, who is also a former gubernatorial candidate in Ekiti state, declared that the diaspora community is not in support of the planned nationwide protest because it is capable of fueling violence.
The General Coordinator of the Yoruba Mandate Group reminded those behind the protest of the economic and political problems that might arise from such protest.
He said, “Although we understand that Nigerians have the right to stage protests, but we are afraid of the economic and political problems this coming protest may create, especially in Southwest Nigeria.Miscreant and political thugs may hijack the process.
“It may lead to
chaos. We all witnessed what happened in Lagos and other parts of Southwest Nigeria during the #EndSars protest of October, 2020. We don’t pray for a repeat of what happened then”.
The Yoruba Mandate Group, however, used the opportunity to advise the government to work more on reducing the economic hardship Nigerians are currently facing.
He suggested that
farming and industrialization should be promoted and supported by the government at different levels to address the problems of rising costs of food items and other essential commodities.
