Oyo State governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde has released funds for burial of designer of the Nigeria’s flag, Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, OFR
The family of the deceased disclosed this on Friday, in a statement signed by its spokesman, Mr. Samuel Akinkunmi.
Akinkunmi, a native of Abeokuta in Ogun State, lived in Ibadan, Oyo State until his death on August 29, 2023.
Akinkunmi’s design was selected as the best in 1958 among all other contestants that presented their designs in a competition to get a new national flag design for the country.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, had led a delegation of the federal government to the family of the deceased in Ibadan, promising that the Nigerian government would stand by the family.
In a statement on Friday, the family announced, “This is to notify the general public that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has released funds for the burial of our patriarch”, part of the statement read.
This is coming shortly after a bold intervention and successful lobby of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and Southwest Governors by Coaliton of June 12 Activists as a reminder on their pledge for a beffiting Burial, which was made to the breaved family, 11 months ago.
The lobby complimented the earlier efforts made by the Oyo State Governor’s Advisory Council, Oyo State 7th Assembly under the Honourable Speaker, Rt (Hon) Debo Ogundoyin, and Yoruba World Congress in United Kingdom.
